Restore Your Website Backup Files in cPanel

No matter how experienced you are in managing your web hosting account, unexpected issues with the server network or database can still arise, potentially leading to data loss. But don’t worry, cPanel has the necessary tools and features to restore a previous copy of your website files, as detailed in this guide.

IMPORTANT:

Restoring your website backup files is only possible if you've previously created a backup. Refer to our Create Website Backup Files in cPanel guide for more information.

If you have a backup of your website files ready, continue reading this article.

Note that cPanel doesn't offer an option to restore a full backup. However, you can restore partial backups (Home DirectoryMySQL DatabasesEmail Forwarders, and Email Filters backups) using these two options:

We'll show you how to restore your website backup files using both options.
 

cPanel Backup

  1. Log in to your cPanel.
  2. Go to the Files section, then click Backup.
  3. In the right column, choose the type of backup file you want to restore (Home Directory, MySQL Databases, Email Forwarders, and Email Filters) and click the Choose File button.
  4. A pop-up window will appear. Locate and select the applicable partial backup file from your computer.
     
    NOTE:
    Refer to the table below to know the file extensions of your partial backup files:
    Section of Website Files File Extension
    Home Directory .tar.gz
    MySQL Database .sql.gz
    Email Forwarders .com.gz
    Email Filters .yaml.gz
  5. Click Upload.

The restoration process may take a few minutes, depending on the file size. Once completed, you will receive a confirmation message. You may click the Go Back button to return to the Backup page.
 

cPanel Backup Wizard

  1. Log in to your cPanel.
  2. Go to the Files section, then select Backup Wizard.
  3. Click the Restore button.
  4. Under Select Restore Type, select the type of backup file you want to restore: Home Directory, MySQL Databases, Email Forwarders, and Email Filters.
  5. On the Final Step page, click the Choose File button.
  6. A pop-up window will appear. Locate and select the applicable partial backup file from your computer.
     
    NOTE:
    Refer to the table below to know the file extensions of your partial backup files:
    Section of Website Files File Extension
    Home Directory .tar.gz
    MySQL Database .sql.gz
    Email Forwarders .com.gz
    Email Filters .yaml.gz
  7. Click Upload.

If you want to restore other sections of your website files, you may click the Go Back button to return to the Backup Wizard page.
