Domain Transfer FAQs

  • What is a UDAI?

A UDAI (Unique Domain Authentication ID) is an alpha-numeric 8 character code which is required to enable the transfer of a .nz domain name from one registrar to another.

The UDAI for your domain name must be provided to you promptly by your current registrar whenever you request it.

If you are asked to provide a UDAI to anybody for any other purpose than changing the registrar for your domain name then you should query this request.

  • What is an EPP Key / Auth Code?

An EPP Key (also known as an Auth Code or Authorisation Key) is an alpha-numeric code which is required to enable the transfer of Top Level Domains (.com, .net, .biz etc.) from one registrar to another.

The EPP Key for your domain name must be provided to you promptly by your current registrar whenever you request it.

If you are asked to provide an EPP Key to anybody for any purpose other than changing the registrar for your domain name then you should query this request.

  • What is a Registrar Transfer?

A Registrar Transfer is the process of transferring responsibility for the administration and billing of a domain name from one domain registrar to another.  It does not affect any change of registrant, for which there is a separate process called a Registrant Transfer.

The registrar to whom the domain is being moved is commonly referred to as the gaining registrar, while the former registrar is referred to as the losing registrar.

A .nz domain name cannot be transferred to a new registrar during the first five days of registration.

Top Level Domains (TLDs) cannot be transferred to a new registrar during the initial 60 days of registration.
