Importance of keeping your CMS version up to date

If you are one of the millions of people that use a content management system program for your site, then we need to stress why it is so important to keep your CMS version up to date at all times. Programs such asJoomla and WordPressgive you the chance to really personalize your website without the need for too much technical knowledge and that is why they have proven to be so popular over the last decade or so. However, people are often guilty of not updating the version they are on and there are a number of reasons as to why this is a problem.

Your Security Is at Risk

The first main reason why you should have the latest version is because you need to take your website security seriously and each update that either Joomla or WordPress produce will have patched up various security flaws that have been exposed in previous versions. Now, if you are stuck with an older version, then you are leaving yourself wide open to being hacked and your website being defaced and of course there is also the chance of every piece of information connected to your website being exposed. In some instances, that can mean user profiles, emails, and other more sensitive information that you would rather not appear in the public domain.

It is also the case that older versions can be more susceptible to viruses and malware and you need to think along the same lines as you do with your anti-virus software. Would you just allow your anti-virus software to sit there without being updated?  Of course not, because you would know that you were not protected against the most recent threats. In other words, you take your computer security seriously, so why would you not do the same for your website security? In other words, for the sake of website security you need to update your CMS version whenever prompted to do so.

Allowing Your Website to Work Better

Just as security flaws will have been patched in newer versions, so will performance issues and glitches that were not picked up at the initial release. You see, the developers are constantly working on ways to improve your experience with their particular CMS and as each new version is released, the smoother everything becomes and your website works better as a result.

The people behind the likes of Joomla and Wordpress are always looking at implementing new technology, as well as taking advantage of advances in technology in general, so why would you want to be left behind? Their software is updated, the speed at which the website processes information is faster, it is more powerful, it can do more things, and your website can be left behind. Why would you hamper your business in that way?

With so much competition out there, performance is everything with a website, so if you are right up to date, then the visitors to your website will notice the difference and appreciate that you do take the time to make sure that everything is as modern as possible. The last thing that you want is to own a website which is lagging and just struggling to work as it is hardly a good image to portray as stability is key and that is only possible by installing the latest version. In other words, if you are serious about performance, then you need to update your version as soon as possible.

Taking Advantage of Brand New Features

It is also the case that the latest versions ofCMS programsoften have more features or the old ones are vastly improved. This applies to brand new features to the Internet in general as well since you get advances such as responsive design, or the need for sites to work perfectly via smartphones and tablets.

Each new version takes all of this into account. Registering on your new site becomes smoother via smartphones due to a change that has been made to the coding. The ability to show media in new and exciting ways becomes so much easier. Designs become more advanced and now the core program is capable of handling those new designs without it lagging. New modules or plugins that you are using are now compatible rather than breaking down at every opportunity. In other words, if you want to take advantage of the latest features and to make sure that your site ties in with new technology on the Internet, then you need to update your version.

Those are three core reasons, and indeed benefits, of updating your Joomla or WordPress program to make sure that it is the latest version. Website security, better performance, and brand new features are all key to the potential success of your site, as long as you have the content to back it up.
